ACSPRI Spring Program 2011

BOOKINGS STILL OPEN!

The 2011 Spring Program will be held for one week only from 26th to 30th September. For the first time, the Spring Program will be spread across two venues (simultaneously): Monash University in Melbourne (Clayton) and University of Technology Sydney. A selection of courses will be offered at each venue. Queries can be forwarded to spring2011@acspri.org.au.

Places still remain in many of the courses and we will accept bookings until the week before the program. However, the sooner the enrolment, the smoother the inclusion into the course (i.e. re printing of course notes, creation of computer accounts, correspondence with instructor, etc.)

Dates:
Monday, September 26, 2011 - Friday, September 30, 2011
Early bird cutoff date:
Monday, August 8, 2011
Late Cutoff Date:
Monday, September 19, 2011
How to enrol:

Step 1: Log in to the ACSPRI website (you can create an account or request a new password if required). The Account should be in the name of the person taking the course. Alternative billing details (e.g. for a Finance Officer) can be entered later if need be.

Step 2:  Check the status of the desired course. All courses start off as "Open" until sufficient bookings for the course to be "Confirmed". If you book a course that is "Open" you will be notified by email when it is "Confirmed".

Step 3: Select the title of the desired course to see the course outline page.  Select "Add to cart" and proceed to checkout.

Step 4: Enter billing details (e.g. yourself or an admin/finance officer) and either finalise payment by credit card or request an invoice by selecting 'Direct Deposit' (please keep in mind the relevant payment deadlines).

Course status:

"Open" indicates that there are places available to book in this course.

"Cancelled" generally indicates that the course did not attract sufficient bookings and will not run at the program. In the case that a course has to be cancelled, those who have made a booking are contacted and offered a full refund or a transfer to another course at the same program.

"Confirmed" indicates that there are still a few places left in the course but sufficient enrolments have been made and the course is locked in for the program (it cannot be cancelled).

"Full (Waiting List)" indicates that there a no more places available in this course and a waiting list is in operation. You can join the waiting list via the course page. If a participant in that course is forced to cancel their booking, their place will be offered to those on the waiting list on a first come first served basis. If you are on the waiting list you are not committed to accept the offer. If the waiting list is joined before the early bird deadline, the discounted rate will be available for a very limited time after the offer is made. Waiting list places do not roll over into future programs.

"Closed" indicates bookings have not yet opened or the program has already been run.

Prerequisites:

The following pertains mainly to quantitative courses. Certain qualitative courses (e.g. Nvivo courses) also have strong pre-requisites, as described in the individual course outlines.
Introductory courses generally have no pre-requisites. Intermediate and advanced courses often have pre-requisites specified in terms of existing ACSPRI courses. For example, Applied Statistical Procedures has Fundamentals of Statistics as a pre-requisite. Prior completion of a tertiary level course at a comparable level would be an acceptable alternative. Participants should ensure that they only enrol in courses for which they meet the pre-requisite requirements summarised as follows:
Introductory  Generally nil.  See individual course descriptions for additional requirements.
Intermediate Introduction to Statistics or equivalent and some familiarity with personal computing environments (e.g., Microsoft Windows).  See individual course descriptions for additional requirements.
Intermediate to Advanced  Familiarity with traditional multivariate statistics (e.g., regression and factor analysis) and some familiarity with statistical software packages (e.g., SPSS).  See individual course descriptions for additional requirements.
Advanced Familiarity with advanced multivariate statistics (e.g., structural equations modelling) and familiarity with statistical software packages (e.g, SPSS).  Some familiarity with mathematical notation may be required.  See individual course descriptions for additional requirements.
If you wish to take courses in both weeks of the same program (if applicable), you may enrol in a second course at a higher level, provided that you meet the appropriate pre-requisite requirements.

Cancellation Policy:

Refunds/Cancellation Policy
Course fees are not refundable unless the course is cancelled or your application is withdrawn before the advised Early bird closing date.
A processing fee of $200 will be charged for all applications withdrawn within the period after the advised Early bird closing date and up to the Late Cutoff Date (1 week prior to the program).
It is important to note that the full course fee will be charged for all applications withdrawn after close of business on the Late Cutoff Date.
It is also important to note that ACSPRI does not accept ‘expressions of interest’ for course places, i.e. all bookings, are considered firm, and the applicable cancellation fee is payable, unless you advise cancellation/withdrawal of your booking prior to the advised early-bird date.
If in any doubt about the ACSPRI refund/cancellation policy, you should contact the ACSPRI office via email, spring2011@acspri.org.au.

Venues:

Monash University, Clayton (Melbourne)

Accommodation:

Monash University (Clayton) is located in the expansive South Eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Despite being around 20km from the CBD, and a lack of on-campus options during the Spring Break, there are a number of accommodation options in the vicinity of Monash, which are easily accessible either by a short bus trip or walk:

Hotel Bruce County
445 Blackburn Rd, Mount Waverley, 03 88058400 (from $187 per night)
~8 min bus trip to Monash Uni + 5 min walk

Gateway on Monash
630 Blackburn Road, Notting Hill, 03 9561 4455 (from $176)
~10 min bus trip or ~15 min walk via Normanby St

Clayton Monash Motor Inn
1790 Dandenong Road, Clayton, 03 9544 0911 (from $150)
~6 min walk to campus + ~6 min walk across campus

Novotel Melbourne Glen Waverley
285 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley, 03 8561 2345 (from $180)
20-30 min by bus, including walking time or 6-18 min by car

Monash Hotel
2077 Dandenong Road, Clayton 03 9544 8011 (from $85)
8-10 min walk to campus + ~6 min walk across campus

For those who would prefer to stay closer to the centre of Melbourne and will be using public transport, it is recommended you look for accommodation near any of the City Loop train stations (Flinders St, Southern Cross, Melbourne Central, Parliament or Flagstaff) or alternatively close to Richmond or South Yarra stations, which are both in 'trendy' areas on the South East side of the CBD (on the way to Monash). For help finding accommodation in the CBD and other popular areas see the Visit Melbourne website.

We recommend holding off on booking accommodation until the status of the course you have enrolled in changes to 'confirmed'. A full explanation of course status can be found above.

Car Parking / Transport:

Car Parking
As the Spring Program will be held during the Spring Break, all blue permit spaces will be available for free public parking. Blue Permit areas are indicated on the campus map. When parking, you should take note of the signage around parking areas, as well as the outline of individual parking spaces within the area, to ensure you are within a blue permit space. Multi-level parking N1 should have plenty of spaces available and is the closest large blue permit area to the ACSPRI courses.

Driving Routes
The main entrance to campus is from the South off Wellington Road, near Dandenong Rd (Princes Hwy). If you are taking the Monash Freeway from the City, signage will instruct you off at Blackburn Rd for Monash University. However the earlier exit at Forster Road is a better option as it will reduce the number of right hand turns and it will take you (via Gardiner Rd) to the campus' North West gate at Bayview Avenue, close to the N1 multilevel parking.
Generally speaking, if approaching Clayton from the North, the Northern gates are preferable to the main gate to the South.

Public Transport from the City (or Northern/Western Suburbs)
From the city (or Richmond, South Yarra, etc.), the most direct public transport is the Dandenong, Pakenham or Cranburne trains to Huntingdale Station and then a short bus trip to the campus bus interchange. This journey should take 35-45 min from the CBD, plus walking time.

Other Public Transport
Monash is well serviced by buses thoughout the Southern and Eastern Suburbs with services linking the campus with just about all train lines on that side of the city.
To find the best way to reach the campus by public transport from anywhere in Melbourne, check the Metlink Journey Planner.

From the Airport (taxi)
Monash Clayton is on the other side of the CBD from Melbourne Airport. This is roughly 45 minutes by taxi or car using Citylink (tollway) and the Monash Freeway however you will need to allow much more time during peak hour.  If taking a taxi to the campus, the best spot to ask to be dropped off is on Union Loop Road, which is opposite the tennis courts.

Social Events:

A cocktail party will be held straight after the first day of the program. This is a great chance to unwind after a hard day and get to know your colleagues as well as instructors and other participants in the ACSPRI Spring Program. Beer, wine, softdrink and finger food will be provided.

Venue and Timetable:

All courses run for the full week, Monday to Friday, from 9am to 5pm each day (3pm finish on Fridays). Most courses (all lab based courses) will be held in building 60 in the Engineering Precinct and other courses will not be far away. There will be an official Program Welcome at Lecture theatre E3 in Building 32 at 9am on Monday 26th September.
If you are running late or lost you can contact Marty Lynch (Program Coordinator) on 0422 258 351. This number will only be active during the week of the program.
Morning and afternoon tea breaks will be held each day between 10.30 - 11.00 and 3.00 - 3.30. Refreshments will be provided. There will also be a lunch break between 12.30 and 1.30, however lunch will not be provided.
Campus maps will be available during the program but we strongly recommend downloading and printing a copy here before you arrive if you are unfamiliar with the campus, as it is quite large!
