In this two-day
We will begin by examining the various research designs that require the integration of qualitative and quantitative data, and consider the epistemological challenges arising from such designs. We will then explore the various ways to systematically convert respondents’ words into numbers that can be used for further (statistical) analyses, including the use of qualitative computer software (with a specific focus on NVIVO).
We also examine issues of data quality and offer relevant quality criteria in the transformation process including calculating inter-rater reliability. Common statistical methods used to analyse transformed quantitative data will be discussed including factor analysis, correspondence analysis and non-parametric tests. Finally, exemplar published studies that have used some of the techniques discussed will be canvassed.
This course is suitable for early career researchers as well as other researchers with some understanding of qualitative data collection and analysis techniques.
Participants will need laptops preloaded with Nvivo and SPSS. ACSPRI can provide a loan laptop if required.
